for about 3 weeks ive been on toprol xl 50mg cause of extra heart beats..it didnt really help so my dr is starting me on atenolol 100mg im suppose to take 1 and half the first few days then go for the 2nd pill. im starting this on sunday my question is do i just stop the toprol and start on this like take the toprol up until sat then sun i wake up and take the atenolol or do i have to be weened of the toprol first then take the atenolol im asking here cause i forgot to ask my dr when i saw him and its on my mind im going to talk to him this weekend but would like to here others thoughts im not going to do just what you say just getting opinions i am still going to talk to my dr before hand im a 21 male no other conditions except for this

The Toprol XL doesn't need to be weened. The are both beta-blockers. Just stop one and start the other the next day.

you can start med asap, there in the same drug catagory (beta blockers)

You can discontinue the toprol and start the atenolol. I am doing the exact same thing. I was taking inderol for years for an irregular hearbeat and it works good but gave me very vivid nightmares so I was getting any sleep at all.My Dr. put me on toprol but it didn't help so he switched me to atenolol and it seems to help but not as good as the inderol. The atenolol seems to make me very tired so I take it at night.If the atenolol doesn't help perhaps you can talk to your Dr. about Inderol. Good Luck.

I was on the same meds, it was my understading that the only difference between the 2 are the Toprol XL is time released and the atenolol is not. also about a $50 difference in price. The only reason I changed was I lost my insurance and was tring to keep my budget in check. Because the atenolol is not time released I have to take it 2 times a day. Hope this helps!

You do not need to wean off the Toprol XL. Just stop taking it and start with the Atenolol the next day.
