for about 3 weeks ive been on toprol xl 50mg cause of extra heart beats..it didnt really help so my dr is starting me on atenolol 100mg im suppose to take 1 and half the first few days then go for the 2nd pill. im starting this on sunday my question is do i just stop the toprol and start on this like take the toprol up until sat then sun i wake up and take the atenolol or do i have to be weened of the toprol first then take the atenolol im asking here cause i forgot to ask my dr today and its just on my mind now

Well, I'm thinking maybe your doctor told you to start the 1 and a half atenolol for a few days because Toprol XL is extended release and you may have some Toprol in your system by the time you start atenolol. Usually Toprol, like any other beta-blocker should not be discontinued abruptly, but in your case, you are switching from one to another, so it should be fine. You should stop Toprol when you start atenolol. Don't take them both at the same time. As always, you should speak with your doctor, but I give you my advice by experience.
